Target Rifle (TR) is the pinnacle of shooting sports.
The ultimate in ability to shoot accurately over long distances. Elite shooters can get to represent their state, country and also compete in the Commonwealth games and World Championships.
TR involves a person shooting in the prone position, holding and supporting the rifle on their arms, held in by a jacket and sling, using only open sights.
Target rifles are high precision rifles which have been built to specifically perform accurately over long distances. Projectiles and ammunition can be hand made to suit the rifle specs (barrel and twist) to ensure pin point accuracy.
There are two main competition types of TR shooting.
- Individual – Where the shooter has to look at conditions and make changes on their sights whilst shooting.
- Team/Coached – Where a coach sits next to the shooter and makes changes for the conditions and tells the shooter when to fire.

Since then it has gone through several name changes and is know today as the ‘NSW Rifle Association Inc’.
